NORTH CANAAN,
Conn. - James Francis O'Neill, 72, who leaves family on the Cape, died Aug. 6 at the
Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon.
He was the husband of Maureen (Guilmart)
O'Neill for 41 years, and son of Kathryn (Clark) O'Neill of Marstons Mills, Mass., and the
late Lt. James F. O'Neill.
Born in Groton, Mr. O'Neill attended schools in
Groton, Long Island and Cape Cod. In May 1944, he joined the Navy and served in the
Pacific. During World War II, while on duty on the USS Los Angeles, he was involved in the
invasion of Iwo Jima, along with many other islands as well as serving with the
occupational forces of Japan after the Japanese surrender.
In 1974, he purchased the Chinchilla Farm on
Route 7 in North Canaan and opened Serenity Hill Farm, the first free-standing facility in
Connecticut for detoxification and rehabilitation for the disease of alcoholism.
Mr. O'Neill's endeavor was instrumental in the
licensing of facilities and was the first in the state to be accredited by the Joint
Commission on Hospital Accreditations using AA principles as the treatment modality.
Besides Serenity Hill Farm, Mr. O'Neill also ran outpatient clinics in both Massachusetts
and Connecticut.
Mr. O'Neill sold his facility to Parkside Lodge
of Chicago in 1982 and opened Seminole Point Hospital in Sunapee, N.H., on Lake Sunapee.
Because of insurance constrictions and his illness, the hospital closed in September 1997.
Surviving besides his wife and mother are a
daughter, Maureen O'Neill of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a son, Michael O'Neill of Deland,
Fla.; two brothers, Bernard O'Neill of Marstons Mills, Mass., and Daniel O'Neill of St.
Petersburg, Fla.; and a friend of many years, Bill W.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday
in North Canaan.
